Hi. I'm Karen. From the time I was very young, growing up in rural Wisconsin, my dad always told me and my sisters: "Get a 'good' education." My sisters and I were fortunate and were all successful public school students, with support from our parents and our community.
As a parent, I now recognize the strength and value of my dad's words. I value quality public education from pre-K through college and career readiness. I believe strong public schools build strong communities. |
A "good education" for all students starts with thoughtful and creative decisions and a welcoming school environment. Access to pre-K education prepares kids to read and learn. An effective early elementary curriculum is critical for establishing and building on that foundation. Later elementary and middle school add a focus on social development and collaborative learning, important skills for later grades and post-high school education or employment. High school adds critical thinking and academic challenges to help shape our future community.
As a Rochester School Board member, I bring all of these values to the important board decisions. I'll continue to make sure the Board hears from students, parents, teachers, staff, and the broader community on these important issues.

EQUITY, JUSTICE AND REMOVING
|
This is one of my prize possessions, beautifully crafted by my talented friend, Kathy C. The white hat celebrates the women's suffrage movement.
In 2020, we celebrated the 100th anniversary of the long and difficult fight for women's right to vote. I believe it is important to exercise this important right in every election. I support all efforts to register voters and get out the vote for all elections - local, state and national. I also believe it is important for our young people to learn about voting and our elected officials, so they can play an active role in civic engagement. This 2024 election is critical to our future and the future for our children and future generations. I hope you will join me in learning about the issues, the candidates, and that you will join me in exercising this important right. |
ALL ARE WELCOME HERE
It's not just a sign, it's a philosophy.
This is another important possession. Intended as a yard sign, i have always used it in more public ways to convey this important message: All are welcome here.
I believe the Rochester School District does a good job welcoming students, but I believe there is still work to do related to education equity and discipline disparities. I believe my 15 years of experience working in the local juvenile court system, along with my current work representing low-income clients, brings a different perspective to these important and difficult issues. |
I VALUE OUR DEMOCRACY
I believe we are ALL created equal. Period.
A little more personal in these challenging times.
This is Juniper, the rescue dog.
Everyone needs to have some fun and enjoyment in their lives. I actually do some of my best thinking while walking Juniper around our neighborhood. I also have a teenage son, Ean, who is a proud 2023 graduate of Mayo High School. He is now pursuing his higher education outside of Rochester and I am excited to see how his college and career preparation while attending RPS help mold him into a responsible and well-rounded young adult. |
I'm dedicated to the Rochester community.
